Figuring out color!

It was a short day in my still life class today, so we didn't get the full six hours to work on our paintings. Today I wanted to focus on getting my concept down right off the bat, and so I decided to focus on color. My teacher brought in some beautiful flowers that I was immediately attracted to, so the first thing I did after laying in the basic shapes was nailing the color to the best of my ability. After I got the red and the yellow down, I left them alone and when to work on the rest of the painting. Everything else kind of had to be in relation to those two flowers. It was a really interesting way to work. When I first started, I would go in and jump all over the painting and try to paint whatever popped into my head. Now I'm trying to be more careful and consciously make a decision about what I'm going to do in the painting, nail it in the thumbnail or the first few brush strokes, then spend the rest of the time rendering it. This beats trying to figure out what I'm going to say as I go along, as this has meant many, many confused hours going towards a very muddled piece of work. Yeah for breakthroughs! Especially those that save you hours of headache.
