Lightening the background and dropping down the contrast between the legs and the walls. The focal point is going to be her neck, and I've been painting around it because I'm not exactly sure how I want to handle it. Right now I'm happy with getting the values and the drawing down right. Two more weeks!

Really excited about my final project for Zhaoming's figure painting class. I really wanted to post the photos I got from the model shoot, but I'm sure she doesn't want that on the internet. I'm trying to make it a high key painting to push that light, calm feeling, but I have to fight my natural inclination to push the contrast---everywhere. Here goes.

Back to the basics! I'm taking Clothed Figure 3 and am really glad I have a chance to brush up my skills. Forty minute pose. We're focusing a lot on shadow shapes this go-round. It's really interesting how each teacher tackles drawing cloth so differently.

Some more concept work for my thesis. This class is teaching me the value of thumbnailing everything out beforehand. Its so much easier to catch composition issues at that stage, rather than after you've rendered a gigantic painting or drawing.

I had a lot of fun with this in class today. We're nearing the end of the semester, so the teacher is letting us play a bit in class because she knows our finals are a bit tough. It's much easier for me to paint when I get into the subject, and this monkey had a ton of personality. I also used cerulean blue for the first time. Man is it a beautiful color!

Mainly done traditionally with pen and prisma colors, I put the finishing touches on in Photoshop. I'm pretty happy with this so far. It makes me want to write a comic just so I can use it, which might actually make for an interesting story exercise.

It was a short day in my still life class today, so we didn't get the full six hours to work on our paintings. Today I wanted to focus on getting my concept down right off the bat, and so I decided to focus on color. My teacher brought in some beautiful flowers that I was immediately attracted to, so the first thing I did after laying in the basic shapes was nailing the color to the best of my ability. After I got the red and the yellow down, I left them alone and when to work on the rest of the painting. Everything else kind of had to be in relation to those two flowers. It was a really interesting way to work. When I first started, I would go in and jump all over the painting and try to paint whatever popped into my head. Now I'm trying to be more careful and consciously make a decision about what I'm going to do in the painting, nail it in the thumbnail or the first few brush strokes, then spend the rest of the time rendering it. This beats trying to figure out what I'm going to say as I go along, as this has meant many, many confused hours going towards a very muddled piece of work. Yeah for breakthroughs! Especially those that save you hours of headache.

Still Life Painting--in class exercises

Flowers! I just jumped right in with this one, not really planning out what I was going to do. It was a pretty simple set up, except for all of the petals. That was tough. It worked though. I'm pretty happy with how everything turned out, though given a few more hours I'd really like to render some of the flowers more and work on those stems.

We were working on a glass bottle and patterns last week. I tried to keep the painting really warm, and only went in with the blues towards the end to make everything pop. It makes it so much easier for me--at least at this stage in my painting career--to limit my palette. It also helped to keep the color wheel out and constantly stay within my color scheme.

I had fun with this. At first my cool shadows made everything look green and very unappetizing, so I went back and only used warm colors on the food. Tough, but a good challenge. Its making me look at food advertising in a whole new light.
